Windows 7 Beta Mascot; The “Betta” Fish

The first thing that I notice about a fresh Windows 7 beta install is the pretty blue fish on the desktop when you log in. The fish in question is a blue Siamese fighting fish known as a Betta fish… get it, a Betta fish is the default desktop wallpaper of Windows 7 Beta. Who says Microsoft isn’t clever? Apple better watch their backs!

Beta fish have a special place in my heart. Back in 2001 around the time of the Windows XP release my roommates and I had a Betta that was co-mascot of our bachelor/party pad… his name was Cliff. Think Dead Man on Campus, “My name is Cliff, brother of Joe, I got me some crack, I want me some hoes!” Along with Cliff was Pico, our other mascot and together they were the dynamic duo of early-twenty-something party stardom. Seriously, chicks have a weak spot for Mexican dolls and Betta fish. Here are some pics of Cliff and Pico in action…

To make a long story short Cliff and Pico wreaked havoc on the ladies for years to come but sadly in early 2003 we lost Cliff to the giant fishbowl in the sky due to a freak King’s Cup incident. After a night of heavy drinking, a 97 pound girl with a blood alcohol level of .22 confused Cliff’s cup with the King cup… I cried for a week. So, in a tribute to our dear friend Cliff we are happy to bring you the official Windows 7 Beta desktop wallpaper in all her glory below. Please note that this wallpaper comes in a resolution of 1920×1200.

Crazily enough, the Windows 7 Betta (the fish, not the OS) is the same color as Cliff, except reverse… where our Betta was blue, theirs is red and vice-versa. So he’s like the Bizarro Cliff. I just blew my mind. Enjoy the wallpaper!
