Congressman Pete King (R) of Massapequa Park, NY has proposed a new bill called the "Camera Phone Predator Alert Act" which would "require mobile phones containing digital cameras to make a sound when a photograph is taken." Como what? Okay, I understand their are some perverts out there who use their cell phones as "up skirt" devices (see here, here, here) but do we seriously need a law passed that affects all of us because of a few perverts?
First of all, I would hope that the people running our country would know that no matter what restrictions you put on a cell phone someone will find a away around it. If people can jailbreak aniPhone they can certainly get rid of a simple "click" sound. Secondly, when did we start passing laws simply because of the idiocy of a few? Okay, don’t answer that question because that is probably 90% of our laws but you get what I’m saying.
Please be proactive and contact your congressmen and senators when they propose ridiculous laws like this one. I am sure that some people have been wronged by cell phone perverts but do we really need a law screwing the rest of society for it? Most phones already have a click option and I’m sure most people turn it off as soon as possible… I don’t want everyone around me know when I’m snapping a photo to share on TwitPic.
If you live in Congressman Pete King’s district, write him today. If you don’t, write your localcongressmen and let them know just how silly this is… unless of course you support the bill, which we’d like to know why you do.
