Some of you out there may not want to go through the entire installation of Windows 7 again and would rather simply upgrade from a previous build of the beta (such as build 7000) to the latest beta refresh build 7048. Well, to complete this you’ll need to perform a quick registry edit to allow you to upgrade. Be noted that it isn’t recommended that you upgrade from a previous build but we have confirmed with over ten people that have upgraded successfully with no issues.
Please note that all of these tasks should be performed before you insert the Windows 7 Beta Build 7048 installation disk.
1. From the Start menu search box type regedit but do not hit enter. Open the application by right clicking it and selecting Run as administrator as seen below.
2. Once you have the Registry Editor open navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion and locate the ProductName key, it should say Windows 7 Enterprise or Windows 7 Ultimate depending on what version you are running. Ours was Windows 7 Enterprise.
3. Double click the product name key and it should pop up and allow you to edit it.
4. Change the key from Windows 7 Enterprise (or Ultimate) to Windows 7 Business and hit OK.
5. Verify the changes have been made and then close the Registry Editor window.
6. Do not restart the computer. Put the installation CD in and the upgrade option should no longer be grayed out.
