Wow, now I really know I’m getting old… as the first album from my favorite rock band turns 20 this week. Nine Inch Nails burst on to the music scene in 1989 with the release of the masterpiece Pretty Hate Machine, and 20 years later the album is just as relevant as ever. I was only ten years old when PHM came out but I remember the first time I heard my older brother and his hoodlum friends listening to it, I was hooked. Trent Reznor resurrected his Twitter account this week to say “Happy birthday, old friend.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
With that said, there is also big news regarding Reznor’s most commercially successful album, The Downward Spiral. On the recent Wave Goodbye tour NIN had an open camera policy allowing fans to film to their hearts desire, and boy did they. In a huge crowd-sourcing effort by fans from The NIN Hotline and This On is On Us hundreds of fans collaborated to bring together footage of the August 23rd, 2009 show at Webster Ballroom where Nine Inch Nails played The Downward Spiral from start to finish… and fans from that show have put together a completely fan-created live DVD with HD video from the show. Amazing.
