Okay, maybe the title is a little overboard but let me explain… I apologize for the length before hand, this is definitely me ranting.

Back in June I made a post about how the online video sharing site Vimeo is without a doubt the best user generated video sharing site on the Internet. I wrote a 1,000 word introduction and review of the site praising everything from the overall design, the ease of use, the amazing HD features, the personable and active staff and on and on. My only slights on Vimeo at the time were the then 500MB upload cap a week yet I even made excuses for that and their small user-base (when compared to other video sites).

Fast forward five months to last night when I found out that Vimeo’s upload policy’s could be hung on the wall right next to those of Communist China. The journey started when I purchased a Canon PowerShot TX1 HD Camera a while back and it has been collecting dust every since… and I have been wanting to get off my lazy butt and start shooting some video with it and editing in HD in my spare time. Well, I’ve also been playing a lot of Xbox 360 lately and recently I’ve been frequenting a great achievement website… so I thought I’d shoot a short video.

I’ve been playing Gears of War 2 during my free time since it launched last Friday and I’ve been having fun tracking down some of the achievements so I shot a video of how to unlock the Pound of Flesh achievement (seen above). I shot in in HD, slapped some Nine Inch Nails over it, edited it together and threw some captions on. All in all it took me about five and a half hours for to complete the project as there was a learning curve with the camera and the software (Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum)… and overall I think the project came out well for a first shot, it certainly wasn’t rushed.

I uploaded my video to Vimeo and headed for bed, feeling like I actually did something constructive with my time last night by helping to show my fellow gamers how to score some achievement points… and I did so in a technologically superior way than YouTube, so all the better. Anyway, I wake up this morning to check to see if my video had any views and much to my dismay it had been deleted. I logged on to my email to see the following message.

"Your video ‘[DM] Gears of War 2: Pound of Flesh Achievement 720p’ has been removed from Vimeo because it violates our policies.

Vimeo does not allow porn, commercial videos, gaming videos, videos that incite hatred, or videos that you did not make yourself ("I have permission from the creator" does not count as making it)."

Wait, what? You’re kidding right? Vimeo doesn’t allow gaming videos? Since when? Well, it seems a lot hast changed since my review in early June on Vimeo… and I’ll be honest I haven’t been to Vimeo much since then because I actually work for a living now. On July 21st 2008 Vimeo brilliantly announced that "the Vimeo staff has decided that we are no longer going to allow gaming videos on Vimeo." Their decision to ban video games while shocking is fine, it is their website and they can run it how they see fit, it is their excuses for banning them that are flat out ridiculous and wrong.

"Vimeo was created with the intent of inspiring creativity and providing a place to share video with friends and family. The Vimeo staff does not feel that videos which are direct captures of video game play truly constitute creative expression."

Wait, Vimeo feels that they have the right to determine what is creative? Sure a lot of video game clips on the Internet are both stupid and a waste of time but last time I checked you let people determine that on their own, and you certainly don’t make a sweeping comment like you don’t feel any video game videos are creative. My video while simplistic still took about 30 minutes to film, I chose a song that I though would fit based upon the flow of the footage, I chose a font based upon the look and feel I wanted for the video add the two-plus hours to edit, then setup time along with the syncing with the music… how is any of that not creative?

Their second reason was based upon cost and resources which again I understand but how they state it is way out of line… "This decision was not easy, and there was much debate internally; however, we feel this decision will benefit Vimeo in the long run and better benefit the video makers it was created for." So the only people welcome at Vimeo are the type to shoot a flower in HD for 45 seconds with no editing, no music, no real purpose? I see… it all makes perfect sense now. If you were going to say it was about cost then stick to those reasons, don’t try to turn it and make it look like it was the "gamer’s fault" for taking over your systems.

In the end I know all of this old news and from what I’ve seen by Vimeo’s web statistics they are still experiencing growth (Compete/Quantcast), but how much bigger could they be if they didn’t turn away hundreds of millions of gamers? I was ready to put in my credit card number for $60 bucks a year so I could upload HD videos to my heart’s desire until I received that email. It’s their site, their rules which is fine. But they opened up as a basic "tasteful alternative to YouTube" and they changed the rules after the fact… and even more so they did it in the most tasteless of ways by basically censoring people thinking that they weren’t creative enough to be a part of their precious little Web 2.0 website. Vimeo is dead to me now, I doubt they’ll miss me but they won’t shut me up either. BLAH!

Below is my response to their blog post after reading it. It’s trite but I think relevant none-the-less.
"Seriously, who is running this company? I love how the "Vimeo Staff" feels they can define what is truly "creative"… can you be anymore elitest? The bottom line is the average gamer doesn’t fit into your hybrid-driving, MacBook carrying, Vonnegut reading, shaggy-haired wearing, Starbucks drinking, Pottery Barn shopping yuppy 2.0 mold so you found a way to cut them all out.

I was literally in the middle of filling out the credit card payment form when I got the email my video had been deleted… good luck succeeding against YouTube when you think you know what’s best for your user’s content… is this Communist China? Congratulations, you’ve single handedly outcast the largest group of users in all of modern entertainment. I hope to God your investors don’t know about this, because in about 18 months video games will surpass both movies and music in total revenue.

The music industry is in a steady 10% decline in annual revenue while Hollywood is only experiencing less that 2% growth annually… meanwhile, back in the real world video games have been in a constant and healthy growth pattern since 1988 and are now growing upwards of 30% PER YEAR! What a brilliant financial move you’ve made for your investors. Pft. Even in these hard economic times video games remain on the rise while music and moves fall even more.

Shame on you Vimeo, you’ve cast a black eye on the Internet video community as a whole… and you’ve come off as completely dishonest. I am sure that this decision is all about financing as game videos are some of the most browsed on the web so I’m sure it was hurting your pocket. I have praised this site countless times for it’s great design, simple interface, attention to detail and even the very involved staff… now I will tell everyone to steer clear because gamers aren’t welcome here because they aren’t "creative enough," and every single person I know including my parents are gamers."

Well, I’ve finally taken the plunge as a young professional to dip my feet in the cold waters of Wall Street as an amateur day trader. Last week I signed up for an account with SogoTrade and deposited a decent chunk of change to give this whole Wall Street thing a whirl. I know that now is probably the worst time that anyone could start to invest in Wall Street but from what I’ve read and been told countless times, those who can make money in the worst of times can make even more during the best of times. So, I thought I’d help support this great capitalistic society of ours by infusing my few free dollars into the American dream.

I know that trading stocks isn’t for the faint of heart but I figure I throw plenty of my money away on new gadgets and nights out on the town so I might as well start doing something constructive with my spare cash. SogoTrade seems to be the perfect online broker for an amateur trying to make their way into the Wall Street game as they offer the cheapest trades on the Internet. When you sign-up they give you 100 free trades (as most online brokers do) but the trick is, their standard trades are just $3.00 each… that means as a day trader your total swing on a trade is just $6.00 in total commissions, which makes a huge difference when dealing in small trades. Better yet, if you become a premium member for just $10.00 a month your trades are just $1.50 each!

Now, I don’t encourage anyone out there to just jump into day trading head first, I hope they all take time to think about it, research it and then make a decision. I’ve read a lot of great information regarding day trading and plan on reading even more. I’m about 100 pages into The Complete Guide to Day Trading and still have the following books waiting for a read: A Beginner’s Guide to Day Trading Online, The Complete Guide to Investing in Short Term Trading: How to Earn High Rates of Returns Safely, The Little Book of Bull Moves in Bear Markets: How to Keep Your Portfolio Up When the Market is Down and The Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing. Bottom line: read, read and read some more. Day trading is not a get-rich-quick scheme.

Excitingly enough, I made my first trade yesterday afternoon, buying 100 shares of the CIT Group (CIT) at $4.43 a share… and just about 30 minutes later I unloaded the stocks for $4.83 a share, scoring $40.00 in profit. I had done it, I purchased 100 shares of an American company and turned a profit! Sure transactions like my first one won’t make me rich overnight but it isn’t a bad start either, especially considering the past 48 hours the Dow Jones Industrial Average has lost over 800 points. I am going to continue to make "safe trades" like CIT over the next several weeks until I can refine my plan for trading. The goal I am making for myself during these first weeks is trying to prove to myself that even during the current turmoil on Wall Street that there is money being made.

My current plan is simple, I plan to buy and sell shares of low dollar stocks ($1-10 per share) multiple times a day to hopefully pull in $50-300 of profit a day… during these first weeks I am going to limit myself to a maximum of 100 shares per purchase. This is where SogoTrade’s low dollar trades come in so handy for beginners. For example: let’s say I buy 100 shares of GM (GM) at $4.50 a share, then an hour later I resell those 100 shares at $4.80 for a profit of $30, with SogoTrade’s premium account buying and selling those shares cost me a total of $3.00 leaving me with a profit of $27. Taking those same numbers and using Scottrade ($7 per trade) my profit would only be $16 while TD AmeriTrade ($9.99 per trade) would only be $10.02… you see where I am going with this?

In the end I’m hoping to continue to improve upon my plan while making damn sure that I stick with that plan. All information regarding day trading mentions making a plan, refining that plan and sticking to that plan… "your plan is your life-line" as they say. My current plan is watching 61 low dollar stocks from the S&P 500, purchasing a maximum of 100 shares at a time and selling all shares by the end of the trading day (3:00PM CST). Over the coming months I hope to leverage the profits I make in my trades as more buying power to diversify my daily portfolio allowing me to buy more and more stocks at 100 shares each, so I can turn those $40 profits per trading day into hundreds of dollars a day.

Why low dollar stocks? Well, there are a few reasons. First, the risk is much lower on low-dollar stocks… 100 shares of a $4.00 stock is a lot easier to swallow than 100 shares of a $20.00 stock. Secondly, low-dollar stocks generally have a lot of trading volume when compared to other high-dollar stocks. Sure there are exceptions to this rule but the vast majority of the stocks I’m watching have at least two million shares bought and sold in an average trading day with some going as high as one hundred million shares. That kind of volume pretty much guarantees that these stocks will fluctuated a minimum of 10-20% in a trading day, which is the kind of movement I look for in making those $40-$50 sales.

I know I have an uphill battle on my hands and I know I will have my good days and most importantly my bad ones, but the key is that I learn from those bad days so I make them few and far between. Today I’m going to keep my eyes on Ford (F) and GM as they both release their earnings reports this morning which should be dismal considering their asking for a 25 million dollar government bailout. I’ll also be keeping my eye on the National City Corporation (NCC) and Wachovia Corporation (WB) as both of them may see another 100 million volume trading day today. National City just happens to be my mortgage lender… funny how that works, as I’m sure they’ve seen better days; they’re down over $15.00 a share for the year, OUCH!

Over the coming days, weeks and months I hope to post frequent updates and reviews about my trading experiences… including reviews on all the books mentioned above. So stay tuned and wish me luck!

Have a blog that you wish you would update more often? I know I do… well Microsoft recently released a free tool dubbed Windows Live Writer that may help speed up the process a bit. In late May I made a quick post about using Adobe Contribute CS3 for the first time and when I made that post I thought I would actually use the software to update my blog… but that never happened. I didn’t like the look or feel of the software and I found it was faster to simply log into my WordPress blog and post it all the old-fashion way.

Well, here I am back touting another blog publishing product but this time it is free and from Microsoft, and being a professed Microsoft fanboy I’ll actually probably use this one more often. The software works with most major blogging platforms including Windows Live Spaces, SharePoint, WordPress and Blogger. Basically you use the software like you would Microsoft Word and when you’re ready to publish to your blog you just hit the publish button… and *tada* like magic your blog is updated.

I’m going to give this a shot for a few blog posts and see how it goes… if nothing else comes out of it at least it will get me off my lazy ass long enough to make a few posts. If I like the software I’ll take the time out to post a quick "HOW TO" article on it in the next several days… stay tuned.

There are few things in this world that I love more than music… and that’s why I truly enjoy the site Pandora. Pandora is a musical and scientific marvel; it is an extremely intuitive and free automated music recommendation and Internet radio service created by the Music Genome Project. If you’re tired of the same ol’ stale FM radio dial then Pandora is the place for you. This amazing service will introduce you to hundreds of musical acts you’ll love even though you have no clue who they are.

The Music Genome Project uses 400 distinct attributes and 2,000 focus traits to scientifically and mathematically break songs down… so it recommends similar sounds and tempos to you on the next play. You simply enter a song or artist into the Pandora player and it creates a channel for that artist or song. From there it automatically starts playing a song which you can give thumbs up or thumbs down… and it works its magic from there.

Pandora recently released along with the launch of the new iPhone 3G a mobile application that allows you to stream music directly to your phone. This service is also free and is currently compatible with the Sprint and AT&T mobile networks… although you can use it with just about any cell phone with a data plan if you know where to look. I haven’t had a chance to try it out on my phone as of yet but from what I’ve read the Pandora iPhone application is great.

Nothing in life is free, so what’s the catch? Thankfully there really isn’t a catch. The service is free but does have ads that rotate every time you vote for a song. The player also links directly to Amazon and iTunes profiles where you can purchase the track being played, but other than that it is free. You don’t even have to create a profile, but if you do you can share your stations with your friends and vice versa.

Pandora has made my daily music listening habits extremely easy. I no longer have to carry around a ton of songs on my iPhone, or a thumb or portable drive full of tunes. I can simply log onto Pandora, hit play and have fresh music the entire work day… you can’t beat that. I’ve tried similar services like Last.fm in the past but they don’t hold a stick with the excellent recommendation services that Pandora offers.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails just can’t be stopped. When you think he’s done everything an artist can do promote digital distribution and give a giant middle finger to the record labels he blows your mind again. Nine Inch Nails Lights in the Sky Tour Sampler was released yesterday via digital download from www.nin.com. It has been a busy time for Nine Inch Nails, in the past three months Trent and company have accomplished the following:

Released a 4 disk 36 track instrumental album. 9 tracks were released completely free via BitTorrent. He also offered a digital download of the entire set for only $5.00. A download and physical CD for $10.00, a special edition including a picture book for $75.00 and a signed limited edition for $300.

Released the single Discipline to radio stations just hours after it was mastered.

Released the single Discipline along with Echoplex directly to fans for a free download.

Released a new 10 track album "The Slip" for absolutely free in MP3 and high quality formats. This one was "on him."

Purchased a large amount of tickets from each of his tour stops to release a pre-sale to keep the best tickets out of the hands of scalpers and in the hands of true fans.

Releases a free 5 track sampler album of all acts opening for Nine Inch Nails on tour this summer… dubbed "Lights in the Sky." Trent also released a download of more HD 1080p Wallpapers with the release, see below for a preview.

It’s a great time to be a fan of Nine Inch Nails… for nearly a decade Trent would come out with new material every 4-5 years and now without being under the lock and key of a record label it looks like we may have new material 4-5 times a year. Below is a preview of the wallpapers that you can download here.

Sure Tivo has replaced canines as man’s best friend but out of all of my current gadget loves my Windows Home Server is now my savior.

So why so much love for Windows Home Server? Well, there are a ton of reasons why this little black box is the most important item in my house… and I’ll let you know of a few of them. First of all I love it because all of my precious files that I’ve been hording over the past 12+ years are now tucked safely away in a central location that automatically backs itself up every morning. I have over a decade of MP3s, movies, pictures and personal files that I’ve spent hundreds of thousands of hours acquiring and arranging just how I want them and it is good to know that those files are safe.

Secondly, not only are my files stored away on the server and backed up but all of the computers in my house are backed up nightly as well. If I have a computer crash or hardware failure all it takes it popping in a recovery CD and after a few minutes my precious notebook or desktop are back up and operational saving me hours of frustration and loss. Unfortunately at this time my desktop is running the 64-bit version of Windows Vista Ultimate which isn’t currently supported by WHS so it isn’t being backed up right now but with the upcoming release of WHS Power Pack 1 I’ll be nearly loss-proof (I’m in the beta of the Power Pack and will make a post about the install and improvements).

The third reason I love my Windows Home Server is STORAGE, STORAGE, STORAGE! That’s right, now with a ton of centralized storage I no longer have to transfer files back and forth from my desktop to my notebook and back again, now I can have them in one centralized location and use offline files as needed on the notebook. I also can keep multiple versions of all files and never delete any unneeded file if I don’t want to. It might sound silly but it is awesome being able to pull up any of the thousands of pictures I’ve taken in the past decade, good or bad. With three spare drive bays and a USB 2.0 port storage for my server is easily expandable, I’m now up to 2TB with a third coming soon… and an external drive will be added for extra backups. With 1TB drives for only 200 dollars storage will never be a problem for me again.

Since I have enough space to do literally whatever I want that brings me to the fourth reason why I love this little black box. I am currently going through the process of ripping my gigantic DVD collection of over 500 DVDs and HD-DVDs to the Divx format so I never have to go to the DVD shelf again… Since I own a PC and Notebook running Vista Ultimate I get to enjoy the beauty that is Windows Media Center, and since I own an Xbox 360 I can use that as a Media Center Extender. So now I can watch my entire DVD collection via my televisions and my computers and/or Xbox 360 running Windows Media Center. Burning all of my DVDs to a digital format will be time consuming, I have over 150 so far but in the end it will be well worth it.

The fifth reason I love my Windows Home Server is Microsoft’s brilliant inclusion of Add-Ins. Microsoft has allowed the WHS community to spawn a group of people who develop Add-Ins to expand upon the functionality and accessibility of your Home Server. My favorite Add-In to date is WebGuide, an easy to use and easy to setup plugin that allows you to view all of your multimedia files online via your WHS logon. You can stream your music and videos as well as view all of your images right from your server.homeserver.com address. This Add-In was so popular that Microsoft actually purchased it. Microsoft made it easy to access your server from the web with it’s super-simple Remote Access configuration.

I could literally talk for hours about how much I love Windows Media Server, and HP’s MediaSmart server is a great deal and a nice and sleek product for the price… you’d be hard pressed to build your own for the price, especially one with a hot-swappable drive bay. With Windows Home Server Microsoft has produced a fantastic product that is completely expandable and they’ve made it easy to personalize your WHS to do just about anything you’d like. Their inclusion of IIS and a free security certificate allows you to access your home server from anywhere in the world… you can do nearly everything with your WHS that you could do with an actual full-blown server, they’ve simply made it easier. Every twenty-first century home should have a Home Server.

Look for more information regarding Windows Home Server soon…

I know I am a self-proclaimed Microsoft fanboy but my opinion on this matter is based solely on my information technology experience in corporate America with multiple fortune 100 companies and not for my love on everything One Microsoft Way. I’ve purchased and support both PC and Macs for nearly a decade and my opinion in this article is based solely from that perspective.

Corporate America is the crown jewel of the technology world and everyone is vying for a piece of the huge pie. Nearly every employee of ever company in corporate America uses a computer of some sort… and most companies upgrade and roll out new equipment every 3-5 years so getting a foot in the door of a company can keep you fed for a decade or more if you play your cards right. In this post I’ll go into great detail about how Apple is all wrong for the corporate world and the business world in general. Some of arguments will be quite obvious while others will be about aspects of the business world people tend to forget about or ignore. I won’t touch on all the errors of Apple’s way as I don’t have all day and I’m sure you don’t either.

Flat PC vs. Mac cost is the big elephant in the room when you talk about Apple products. Sure Apple has some amazing designs but you pay a pretty penny for that trendy looking laptop. For every Mac a company buys they could buy at least two PCs of equal or higher technical specifications. For every one of your Macbooks I can buy two Dell Vostros or HP Pavilions. For every one of your iMacs I could buy two or three Dell or HP desktops. For every one of your high end PowerMacs I could buy two high powered Dell or HP desktops… and it goes on and on, the cost increases two fold when you throw Apple servers into the mix versus Windows based servers. The bottom line is Apple views their products as premium devices and you’ll pay premium prices for them too… they also don’t deal with the volume of sales that PC makers do so they can’t give you as big discounts when ordering large numbers. Dell and HP are known to give discounts of up to 60% for their most loyal of customers.

Hardware support costs are another big difference in a corporate environment. Many if not most of Apple’s products use proprietary hardware or at least hardware that only Apple will support… another words if a hard drive goes out you better replace it with a supported hard drive that has Apple’s seal of approval or you’ll risk voiding your warranty. Apple took a step in the right direction when they finally started going with Intel as their chip maker of choice but there problems don’t stop there. With most PC vendors they buy and use whichever parts are available at a decent price at the time of the order, so their hardware is mix and match-able. If you have bad RAM just replace it with the same specification of RAM, the manufacturer does not matter… the same goes with hard drives, video cards, sound cards and just about everything except the system board. There are also more PC based hardware vendors available across the globe because PC is the big kid on the block, which helps improve upon support response time.

Support personnel costs are yet another huge area of concern for companies hoping to switch to Apple products. Software and hardware support for Macs are through the roof when compared to Windows based platforms. There are hundreds of Windows trained desktop and help desk technicians for every Apple trained technician. Don’t believe me? Check out the job listings on all of the major job boards, there are countless listings for Windows trained technicians but the ones asking for Mac trained technicians are few and far between. Mac support technicians make more money because there are fewer of them so the companies that use Mac are paying a premium for their support because people going into the IT support industry will go with learning Windows the vast majority of the time… its called job security. Since there are so few Apple trained technicians floating around you have to learn to keep those employees happy, there is no room for high turnover in an Apple supported environment.

Microsoft product support and cost kick backs are another huge aspect of not going with Apple. You see, Microsoft is a software company that makes a huge amount of money off of selling business multiple applications across their entire environment and in doing so they have the ability to cut costs and give companies huge discounts. Basically a company that runs Windows PCs and Windows servers is going to save on licensing fees and support across all of their Microsoft products. In a brilliant move by Microsoft they happily give huge cost incentives to businesses that choose to go with more of their products, which is something Apple simply can’t do on such a large scale because they don’t have a large software catalogue. A company that uses all Microsoft products will save millions annually… which means more money for investors and more money to expand.

Vendor costs come into play when you start talking about support for Macs. Most large corporations and especially enterprises have countless third party and in house software vendors to deal with. An enterprise can have thousands of third party applications that run on client machines and servers and most of those applications support only the Windows based environment. Again these vendors know that nearly their entire customer base is running Windows so they focus their designs in that environment… supporting both Windows and Mac would generally increase their development costs and time which would raise the costs to the end customer, which would be you. Many third party applications are web based now so they work from most current browsers even on Mac but I know from personal experience that a vendor will always point to an error in their product on a machine running Mac as the fault of it being a Mac, not their software.

Training costs are another pain of switching from Windows to Mac. Many corporate users have a hissy fit when you change their version of Internet Explorer much less their entire operating system… and contrary to the slogans the learning curve on Mac isn’t as easy as they say. For someone that has spent their entire career on a Windows based PC most users will be completely lost when you put Mac OSX in front of them. For a company to switch to Mac they would have to put a large amount of time and money into retraining their users to use the new OS, and I’m sure most of them would have a problem with the silly mighty mouse. I can just picture the sixty five year old accountant flipping out over just having one button on the mouse and a technician spending all morning with them showing them that just because there isn’t a physical button doesn’t mean you can’t right click…

Now some Apple lovers may argue that Apple may cost more but it will just save you that much money more in the long run do to productivity increase, ease of use and setup, machine uptime the lack of viruses and spyware and so on and so forth. Well, I can tell you now that is all B.S. A worker who has used Windows for the majority of their career will be able to work faster and more efficient with what they are familiar with. Macs are more difficult to setup in a business environment because again most other aspects of a business environment are geared towards the use of Windows. You will face the same driver issues and peripheral issues with a Mac that you do with a PC, see the horrendous Blackberry support on a Mac for what I mean. Also, if an infrastructure team does their job right viruses on a network shouldn’t be an issue regardless of the platform, so that argument is moot.

I could really go on for hours about how Macs are just wrong for a business but I don’t have to, it can be summed up on a few sentences. The bottom line is Macs cost more in nearly every aspect of a business infrastructure and not just a little more but the difference in cost is quite substantial. Apple’s products are a niche and should be purchased and used on a case by case basis in a business but should never be rolled out across the board. Now, if a company wants to go Mac then more power to them but there is no way I could ever give my blessing to rolling out Mac because I know I could put those thousands and thousands of dollars to better use in improving upon our company as a whole. For every 100 Macs I don’t buy I could get another technical support person on board so my end users will be happier and more productive… and to me that is easily money better spent.

I know my points made here are done so in the aspect of a large corporate or enterprise but I believe using Macs in a small business or startup is even more destructive. Generally startups and small business have less room for error and blowing money away on Macs is a waste in my opinion. I’ve never worked for a small business other than my own entrepreneurial endeavors but I do know that every penny counts when trying to make something out of nothing so I don’t see how any company large or small could look in their shareholders eyes and say that spending a premium on Apple products over those of PCs is better for the company. Again please don’t think all of this is coming from my love of all things Microsoft because honestly if I was starting up a company I would look into using open source products to save money initially and get the company off the ground.

Thoughts? Opinions? Tell me I’m right. Tell me I’m crazy. Tell me I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about… tell me something!

Disclaimer: It should be noted that Brad currently owns a 17" MacBook Pro, an iPhone and multiple iPods and has purchased Apple products many times in the past, including the business environment. Brad is also an Infrastructure Manager for a Fortune 500 company.

Online video sharing has become the crown jewel of the internet. Video viewership has continued to climb across the world over the past three years and the amount of time web surfers spend each day viewing online videos has expanded ten-fold. ABI Research recently released a report showing that online video viewership will quadruple to over one billion users by the year 2013… that will be one in every seven people on the face of the planet. One thing is certain, online video is here to stay and it will continue to keep growing as the medium is sure to evolve into a higher quality, faster and easier to use way.

Every since YouTube first began to catch on in late 2005 the landscape of the internet has changed. Everywhere you look nearly every website across the globe has changed and integrated video to help improve their site and their message to their visitors… the once text based world of the internet is now returning back to a visual experience which will help drive even more people to the interwebs. The easier websites and the internet are to understand, the more casual users will give it a chance and stick around. So easy even a cave man can do it.

The overnight sensation and popularity of YouTube has spawned a flock of copy-cats and clones who are trying to get a piece of the video sharing pie… however it will take a small miracle for one of the many clones to grab a bite seeing as YouTube now has Google’s large elbows like a prisoner in the mess hall. Many of the other video sharing sites have improved upon YouTube’s model and actually offer a better service. Veoh, BrightCove, Revver, Blip.TV, MetaCafe, iFilm, DailyMotion and others have helped improve the video sharing experience and in my opinion are better sites than YouTube… however one site stands above them all, and that site is Vimeo.

Vimeo is an amazingly well designed Web 2.0 video sharing site and is really like no other on the internet. When you visit the home page of the site you can see some videos that the Vimeo team likes, you can explore via groups, channels or projects or you can view their High Definition videos. That’s right; Vimeo is the premiere HD video sharing service and allows users to upload videos in 720p resolution (1280×720). Since Vimeo is the best at user created HD video sharing they have a very technically competent and helpful user base. Reading the comments on HD videos you’ll notice a very interactive experience with intelligent dialogue back and forth, unlike most other video sharing sites.

Vimeo’s user experience is also easy to use and navigate. When you log into your account you are greeted with four tabs that help you around the site. Your inbox informs you of any new messages/comments as well as lets you know if any of your favorites has posted another video. Your My Stuff tab lets you keep tabs on your uploaded videos and albums. The Activity tab lets you browse what is going on across all of Vimeo or just what you and your favorites have done lately. Finally the Discover tab shows you other popular videos from around the site to help you expand your horizons. Vimeo also has an intuitive and simple voting process, you either can vote to like a video or not like a video… no more silly star system!

The video view page and the flash player are slick as well. The flash player has the user controls superimposed over teh video and they show up and disappear as you mouse over and off the video. You can play and pause the video, use a timeline slider, share the video, grab the embed tags, enable or disable HD (to improve the loading time) and maximize the video to fit your entire screen. The page shows the video’s credits, associated tags, a list of people who liked it, a threaded comment system and the video’s statistics. Unlike most other video sites Vimeo’s main focus on each video’s page is the video itself… where most other sites have a small video with tons of clutter Vimeo shows you a large video with the clutter taking the back seat, which is how it should be.

Overall in terms of design, delivery and use Vimeo just blows the rest of the internet video sites out of the water; in my opinion there isn’t anyone even close to the amazing service Vimeo offers. Vimeo’s only real problem is that they limit their users to 500MB of upload storage a week. The cap of uploads is obvious for a few reasons. One, they limit their overhead costs of having to have an insane amount of storage available at any given time. With their membership and growth metrics they can easily estimate the amount of needed storage from week to week. It also helps them keep spammers and illegal videos off of their site. If people can’t upload entire seasons of copyrighted TV shows they’ll probably just move on to a site where they can (and they obviously do).

As of June 2008 Vimeo has roughly 440,000 members which is just a fraction of what YouTube has. I sincerely hope that Vimeo will continue to grow and gain market share as I’d hate to see such amazing site fall victim to not being able to catch on with the masses. With that said, Vimeo’s intelligent users are one of the strongest reasons to use the site, so I imagine most involved are trying to walk the fine line between driving more users to the website while keeping the trash of the internet at other video sites. The numbers from Compete and Quantcast are very promising and show growth of over 200% from April 2007 to April of 2008 with a continued growth of about 20% per month… so the outlook for Vimeo is promising.

It is amazing the growth of technology over the past decade and a half. I get a lot of questions from my not-so-tech-savy family and friends regarding storage, especially on what are the best ways for mobile storage as in what do I use for files that I need to be able to access from anywhere. Well, way back in the mid 90’s I would carry around my colorful floppy disks in a travel case. In the late 90’s I upgraded from 1.4MB floppy disks to 650MB CDRs packed nicely away in a Fellowes CD Wallet which seemd to do the trick for about six years or so. Then I moved on up to the east side with a thumb drive that I kept on my key chain… but sadly I was stuck with only 128MB of storage while now you can easily get an 8GB stick for well under $50.

The problems with all of those mediums is the overall lack of storage space, the hassle of lugging it all around and the security of keeping your files out of the hands of others. If you have your sensitive and personal files saved on a physical storage medium they will always be at risk of theft or misplacement, so physically storing your files is no longer the right option… I learned that the hard way as I not only had a CD wallet full of software and personal data CDs stolen out of my car but I also lost a thumb drive that fell off my key chain. The thumb drive was a huge scare as it was full of personal files including financial records, credit records and even a copy of my resume on it. Luckily I was smart enough to encrypt the files so nothing ever came about from it, but if a technically competent person found it they could have easily stolen my identity.

So, there has to be a better way right? You’re right; there are quite a few ways thanks to the severe drop in cost of storage (1TB drive for $200!). Well, the answer for me at least is a gift from our friends in Redmond. SkyDrive is a free online storage and sharing system that is part of Microsoft’s Live family of products. For the cost of nothing Microsoft gives you 5GBs of online storage to do what you will with. The beauty of the service is you can obviously access it anywhere in the world that has an internet connection, they offer you a huge amount of storage, the site is incredibly easy to use and you can also make your files private or share them publicly with your friends, family and colleagues as needed.

I’d go through a step by step process of how to use the site if it was needed, but the system is so well put together that it is rather self-explanatory. If you want to add a file, hit he add file button. If you want to create a new folder, hit the create folder button. Public folders are obviously viewable by everyone. Shared folders are folders only those you choose can view. Private folders are just what they say they are… only viewable to you. If you use other Microsoft Live services such as Live Spaces, Live Events, Live Galleries or Hotmail then you’ll be happy to know that your SkyDrive is linked to all of those other services via a very slick and Vista-like design. So, ditch the floppies, CDRs and flash drives and take SkyDrive for a spin.

Alexander Muse of the Texas Startup Blog sent out a Twitter alert earlier about an amazing new search startup called Viewzi. The site which officially launches next week offers unique visual ways to sort through your web searches. Pulling in data from various other search engines such as Google, Live and Yahoo Viewzi offers visual aides and previews of your searches rather than your basic text results. If you’ve ever used iTunes/iPhone Coverflow interface Viewzi will look pretty familiar, it is a brilliant idea and one I can’t believe hasn’t been used before… frankly I’m jealous I didn’t think about it.

When you enter a search keyword or phrase (I of course first searched "Nine Inch Nails") Viewzi allows you to choose how you’d like to browse your results via a coverflow-like interface, including but not limited to:

01. MP3 Search View
02. Web Screenshot View
03. 4 Sources View (Ask, Google, MSN and Yahoo)
04. Video x3 View (BlinkX, Veoh and YouTube)
05. Basic Photo View (Flickr and Riya)
06. Simple Text View (Compete.com, Google and Yahoo)
07. Celebrity Photo View (Google Images and Just Jared)
08. Reuters News View
09. Everyday Shopping View (Amazon, Ebay, Target, Walmart)
10. The Weather View
11. TechCrunch (CrunchBase, TechCrunch)
12. Amazon Book View

It is pretty amazing; each one of the options above gives you a completely new way to view your results… the most impressive of which are the Video x3 and Celebrity Photo. With Video x3 the results are pulled from all three of the video sites and begin to auto play without sound in three rows, it is very impressive to see. With the Celebrity Photo View you can click and drag the photos around like you would if the pictures were printed out and laying on your coffee table… it makes searching actually fun. The Web Screenshot view will get a lot of use as well as you get a full preview of the page before actually going to it, so your back and forward browser buttons will probably get a lot less use now.

I could go on describing the other aspects for hours because they are all so intuitive, but I’ll leave the exploring up to you. Overall I think Viewzi has a bright future ahead of it… I doubt they’ll overtake Google but the site has great promise. It’ll be interesting to see how many of the different search result features catch on and how they evolve the current ones while thinking of even bigger and better ones down the road. I know I’ve spent the past few hours just toying around and extremely impressed with the design and ease of use. I can honestly say that I will continue to use this search as it helps me come across things I’d never noticed with a basic text result, hopefully people will give this technology a chance.

The site doesn’t actually go live until June 9th but via a promotion with Dallas’s CBS11TV Viewzi is offering a special promotion code for closed sine-up; simply enter referral code cbs11… I’d jump on the bandwagon quickly though as they make no mention of just how many signups they are allowing with the code; and with the news looking to hit Digg’s front page soon they may go very quickly over the next 12-24 hours. If for some reason you can’t get in on the closed preview or if you’d like to know more, head to Viewzi.TV where they have a handful of videos showing you the ropes.
